Defining changes is one of the most common situation for daily
life. In architecture, transitions help to define these changes. When some
place become privacy or become public quality, seperation needed and throughout
history, meaning of transition is change. For instance when we look at
Çatalhöyük, we can not see any special transition area in there. There were no
certain hall or lobby. Stairs are key element for them. Their viewpoint about
transition is limited for stairs because they did not have any hierarchic order
or they do not need to define their transitions in spatial manner. But when
privacy and class differences gain importance we can say that transition also
gain importance. In sumerian middle house, there is a hall which is related
with whole of the rooms and it both divide and increase the quality of rooms.
Not only inside of houses but also outside of houses has its transition area.
Generally its called as court and again it is use for increasing privacy level.
Interestingly, principles of court do not have huge alterations in time.
Classical Greek house and Greek House has same court qualities. On the other
hand, transition also used in city plan. Roman Empire is good example for that.
To reach religious place (church, shrine) there is transition area and this
transition area helps people to feel spatial qualities. Where they pray is
exterior of religious area and to differ streets and religious space there is
kind of bridge which helps to make connection between two of them. So where did
I use it? I just benefit from it where my path quality is change. For instance
density of tree and slope conditions are not same whole of penisula of Eymir.
So to emphasize these differences, I use transition. In there transition
generally define enclosure differences. And these transition areas make more
understandable to whole of my path even it does not have any aim like privacy.
Each structure has its own story. And this is Khan Shatyr's one. For Arch372 lesson we choose a structure and examine its structural details. We find Khan Shatyr as interesting and made research about it. Tension of roof, its durability, materials, technique of construction is quite different from other ones. And here some explanative poster about structure with diagrams.
Then what is the architectural element that you are going to focus on for this assignment, path? "Path and transition areas within the parts of the path" is fine with me. In that case, your timeline should also focus on examples in that regard, not on every kind of thing that can be related to the general concept of transition. This was made very clear in the discussion hour.
